You don’t need to apologize for your body.
You don’t need to apologize for your weight. For the curve of your thighs. For the softness of your belly. You don’t need to apologize for not having exercised since high school. For your struggle when you do push ups. For being out of breath.
You don’t need to apologize for prioritizing time with your kids over running. For advancing your career instead of sunrise yoga. For watching Netflix instead of lifting weights.
You don’t need to apologize for choosing pizza over broccoli. For drinking the whole bottle of wine. For indulging in packet of snickers pods.
You don’t need to apologize for your belly fat. For the jiggle of your arms. For buying a pair of jeans one size bigger than last year.
As a Brisbane female personal trainer, on behalf of the fitness industry, I need to apologize to you.
I’m sorry we made gyms intimidating, instead of inclusive.
I’m sorry we represent fitness with only the faces and bodies of thin young white women.
I’m sorry Instagram has turned unqualified people into authority figures because of #fitspo
I’m sorry for the lack of industry regulation which allows this to happen.
I’m sorry your trainer didn’t listen, when said you need to rest.
I’m sorry we’ve excluded you.
I’m sorry we’ve shamed you.
On behalf of the fitness industry, I’m sorry. We’ll do better. I am doing better. Here’s how.
- There is no body shame talk allowed in my classes. Ever.
- I will never tell you to do X exercise to ‘earn’ Y food
- I will never talk about burning calories or melting fat
- I will never shame you for your body or your choices
- I will support you in your journey to healthier living
- I will listen
- I will not make judgements about you
- I will be there for you
You never, ever need to apologize for your body!
